A yummies story

Sid had tuck shop at school recently. You know, one of those things where parents lose some money to the kids and they get to buy all the snacks at school we've been avoiding at home. Well, at least they get to handle money and do some math.

So Sid bought some, ate some. But then he bought some tiny packets of yummies and stashed them in his bag for 'later'. For when he could eat in peace. He gets off the van near home and starts walking and eating. Now we always some specimens of the bovine variety hanging around our streets and one such, quite a biiiiiiig one, as described by Sid, was right in the middle of the road. Normally this wouldn't phase an Indian one bit. But Sid is barely 9 and I understand his consternation when he says the cow started coming at him 'for the yummies'. He tried dodging but it kept blocking the road and was, yes, gunning for the yummies. If you know yummies, you know they're fried snacks, those crunchy, spicy ones, hardly manna to a cow's palate.

Anyway, Sid ws now unnerved and when he saw two men walking past he asked "Uncle, can you please help me"? The two men just laughed and walked away. So not having learnt how to fend off attacks by cows ravenous for yummies at school, he did what he could. Threw the two opened packets on the road and scrambled for the gate.

Soon as he was in the door, he offered to show an unbelieving me the size of the cow and the two now empty packets lying on the street. But I was more perturbed about the two men who had just laughed off his request for help. What are we adults coming to?

Sid musing, Jay learning

Sid said today "I wish we knew everything just when we were born". Now if we had a penny for every time a kid wished that...

Jay wishing Sid goodnight "Goodight... feet dreams"...

Calling up

Jay's playing with his building blocks (for a change!) and he picks up a block, pretends its a phone and is talking.. I can only hear his side of the conversation. "Ya.. You coming..to play? OK.. No no. I not playing now. OK. Bye." Then he puts the phone down and tells me "Amma that was somebody". At 2 and a half.

Paisa movie

Jay is coming with stuff faster than I can blog it...

I'm sitting in front of the laptop and he says "amma I will put a coin in the laptop". That's, he wants to slide a coin into the CD slot. I said no obviously. And he argues "if i put it here, comes paisa movie".

Pajabi

Of late, when we make pav bhaji at home, Jay's excited. He likes the pav, not the bhaji and will make a dinner out of just pav. What he calls it, tho, is the highlight of any eve we make this - Pajabi.

Jay's mouth fundaes

"I'm getting mouth sleepy" when he yawns.

The best yet is..when he burped and was old enough to figure out that the burping could be called something, he said..... "mouth fart". I AM NOT kidding!!! :):)

Jay's "inging"

He is put downing...

Phases...

Jay's vocab is now in the "get upping", "put offing" stage.

And when Balu asked him yesterday if he wants to drive the car...while we were out. He said no. Balu asked him why and he said "because it is very diffikult". Soooooooo sweetly he tried to say that big word and got it right.

Morning antics

When Jay is up and Sid isn't, on a holiday, it's Jay's prerogative to go wake Sid up. 'Waking' includes jumping on Sid, snatching his blankie and any other tricks he can think of. Today, Sid did wake up. Then Jay gets his blankie and puts it over his head and says 'ghossst, I am a ghost'. This is a new game. Then he takes it off and says "Ma, now I becane Jay". :) (Became is becane).

He's got the blankie on his head again and suddenly it goes off and he says "Phhbbttt! I don't like saaru mamma (rice and rasam). I like only pasta!". Then the blankie goes on again.

Sid just happens to touch Jay's blankie. He shrieks and snatches it away. "Anna (big bro) don't touch mine...you have your own pinku (that's Sid's name for his blankie)."

Lil Jay is getting quite territorial.

Sid learning comparative, superlative

Sid has the comparative and superlative forms of words (in class 3 for god's sake). So I ask him for the c and s forms of good. He said 'better' alright. And was struggling with the superlative...'betterest' was one answer. I told him to remove some alphabets from the word and would get it right. The next answer was 'brest'.. hilarious when spoken :):):)

More 'schooling'

Sid's supposed to learn 'general' names for things. He was doing ok:
peas, potatoes, carrots (vegetables)
roses, lilies, jasmine (flowers)
But tables, chairs, beds (stuff)...!!!

I'm special, they're not special

I was running Sid through his English lessons and asking him how to spell receive. Jay started saying receiv, receive.. So I say "God, I have to go through this with you as well! So many years of 'schooling'!
So Sid is exulting, at my 'trouble'. I get miffed, of course, and say wait 'til you get your own kids. They'll trouble you like this. Sid says I'll whack them one or two. So I say, ha! Can I whack you too then? He says No, because I'm special, they're not special... :-|

Thursday, August 19, 2010

Sid's learnt this from a friend...

As usual, Jay is snatching everything Sid picks up. And after 5 minutes of this Sid goes "Maddy goose, chaddi loose, mental goose, American mongoose".

Hey, shrug. I'm not the right person to answer where this came from :-|

How he talks like this???!!!!

After washing his hands and legs, with soap, all on his own!!!! "Towel very high. I trying to climb up."!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More bak bak from Jay

He's found a small pipe from his toy set today. I was telling to lay a pipe in the game. He picks it up and decided it's better off as a salt/pepper shaker. He says 'little pepper, little salt' shaking it. I have no idea when he learnt about salt/pepper shakers!

Amma, "top (stop), 'toooppp, 'toopppppp!" If he wants me to stop what I'm doing and turn his way.

Jay 'pider (spider) scared. 'pider bite Jay, anna...

Gimme chips. Gimme piknik. Gimme candy. Gimme ball. Gimme never ends....

Jay put tab (for tube), go chimming (swimming).. when hot sun.

"This one Jay, this one anna..." (demarcating what's his and isn't...)

The time is always "7.30"... :) if u ask him

All in a day's vocab - with Jay

'Amma, what fell?' - if he hears something fall.

'Jay go play alone' - if I tell him there's no one in the playground and he'll get bored.

'Anna (Sid) see waka waka, Jay see freedom' - when he wants to see K'Naan's Give me Freedom on youtube. And after his song, he will want to see waka waka also.

'Ay, why natch?' 'Ay, why push'? 'Ay, why throw ball there?' 'Ay, why amma cold (scold) me?'... as if there aren't so many unanswered questions out there already !

'Amma, elp me' - if something's stuck and he can't get to it.

'Raksha, Ratan...wear cap. Me also'

'Pease give me, last candy, ok?' (this is repeated at least ten times a day).

'Show me runnin' one video'.

There are so many more things he says, so cutely. More as and when I can remember :).

Jay amazes me every day

Jay's been listening to the alligator-monkey story for a few nights now. In which the alligator wants to eat the monkey while ferrying him across the river. And the monkey gets away by telling the silly alligator that his heart is across the river and the alligator can eat him after he gets across.

Jay is also looking at picture books these days and he saw a heart shape the other day. I told him it was a heart the day before yesterday. This morning when he turned to the page again, he identified it as a heart.

When I showed surprise that he remembered it's a heart, he says, "heart, same monkey story".

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sid thinks different!

I was showing Sid a hard cover book that had 3 jackets (by mistake, I suppose). I'd removed 2 of them and he said- we can use this as gift wrapper. Just what I was thinking too!

Random muttering

Jay says some cute, and funny and some just silly things while he's pottering around the house alone.

Moolie mama, Shama (Kshama's) appa <:)>

Maharaj face

Thota bheem, dagon fight

Lakakaka milaka milaka

Ankshu, and other Ankshu (this when he remembers that Ankshu and Josie were at Meena's place. He probably doesn't know or remember Josie's name heehee)

Oh mann, aasum man (u already know)

On credit cards

Sid shouts out "Appa, Jay has got your visa and master cards out of your wallet!"

Balu: "What? And I thought he'll wait until he's 16 at least!"

Sid on crows

I was telling Sid about a pair of crows and their baby crow that have been creating quite a story in our apartment complex while Sid's been away at his cousins'.

Sid: Amma, do crows marry?
Me: No. Animals don't have such a thing.
Sid: Then they just stay together?
Me: Yes.
Sid: Okkk..then they know which is a girl and which is a boy?
Me: Ye-e-e-s, they know.
Sid: Ah, that's good then...

;-)

Banana!

A crow comes to drink water off an urn in the balcony. After we shooed it away (it does bring rat's tails), Sid asked me what the crow comes to the balcony for. And Jay, standing by says "Banana!"

Sid's lil story. Oct 2009.

This is a short story Sid wrote at school.

Once upon a time there lived a Queen. There was a magic tree. The Queen asked the magic tree for a gold fish. There was a rat in the tree. The rat turned into a gold fish. After some time the Queen asked for a gold ring. After some time the magic tree died. Then she was playing with a kite.

(Apparently, the Queen became poor after the magic tree died and she was left only with a kite).

What Sid said...about being fat!

Reena, Gary and Shashank were visiting. As all of us lined up for a photoo with camera in auto mode, Sid says "Amma, you are looking fat". Immediately Reena and me are like, come on, no.. not fat. And he says "Yes, you are in this place" and rubs his hand over his chest... :-|.

What Sid said...

It was a cousin's daughter's wedding. Sid was asking who's wedding, and I told him it was my dad's brother's granddaughter's. He asked about dad, which I've heard before, about how he is in heaven, etc. When we got there, he met my uncles and was reminded that they were dad's brothers. (We don't meet relatives that often). Couple of hours later he tells me "Ma, you said those were ur dad's brothers. Then only I wanted to tell u that see, it's as if ur father is alive".

Like many things Sid says, this is loaded too.
